Fire-Ball EX 6.4 Have 50 of these in a school learning lab...worked OK for 1 year, now I have replaced 5 within a month....and others show symptoms of a short life...won't buy any more of these beasts

Worked flawlessly for a year then died. Good points: worked perfectly, no problems with setup under win or linux. No serious porblems untill it died completely. Bad points: Died after less than a year. Not impressed.

Great HD, very fast, quiet IMHO, and dirt cheap these days. Runs well in my Acorn RiscPC, no problems setting it up. Bought to complement a 1.28Gb Fireball I've had for 3 years, which has run without a single problem.

I've had endless troubles with this drive. The first had a bad 0th sector, rendering the drive useless. The second developed bad sectors after about a months usage. AND the third just packed up one day. So I'm doing the same as Hellraiser here, and going back to WD... my WDC850 is still going strong and I've never had any other problems with their drives.

Well what can I say? My first hard disk was a Western Digital 850 Mb and its still flawlessly working today. I got myself a Quantum 6.4Gb EX drive a few months ago. Only last week the Quantum drive died.. one minute it was working.. next minute reboot and death. I have to say that this was not impressive and I am not sure I will buy another drive from Quantum.. this hard drive was not being knocked about or abused.. so as to why it failed your guess is as good as mine but its a poor show. The drive was quieter than the replacement drive (Maxtor) and about the same speed. I might also buy another Western Digital drive seeing how well the 850 Mb is doing after several years.

Fantastic! Have had WD's and Seagates and this is by far the best Hard drive I've ever had.

No big complaints about this HD. I've had mine for a little over a year without any problems. (Knock-on-wood!) My only complaint would be that when I first got it, I found it a bit noisy during reads/writes. But I guess I've gotten used to it 'cuz I don't notice it now.

I installed this drive on a machine for a company that had had its previous hard drive, a Western Digital Caviar 32500 2.1GB, fail with the whiirr-clunk of death. It performs very well (fast), and is totally reliable. So far, no trouble. I expect it to last many years. I use a lot of Quantum Fireball's myself, and haven't had any fail yet. Highly recommended.
